Texas Teen Raises $1 Million

A recent article in the Charlotte Observer told the story of 18-year-old Ben Sater, a teenager that vowed to raise $1 million for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children where he had received free treatments as a child.   He has been fundraising for eight years and has finally not only reached his goal, but exceeded it by almost $19,000.

His fundraising began in 2003 at age 11, with a golf tournament for children ages 7 to 18, and he now runs two tournaments each year.  Each child is asked to raise $100 by getting sponsorships from family and friends, but as much as$50,000 has been raised by just one girl.

The tournament is unique in that each one has both a kids committee along with an adult committee, allowing the kids to help in the process by designing the t-shirts, selecting fundraising prizes and helping to plan the day’s program.
