About The Children’s Hospital
No child should ever have to go to the hospital. But when they do, they shouldn’t have to wait to get the medical care they need.
WakeMed has built a new Children’s Hospital – the first one in Wake County – where children can receive the medical care they need, as soon as they need it.
For decades, parents and pediatricians have trusted WakeMed to care for our children. We serve more than 143,000 children per year, making WakeMed one of the most popular hospitals for children in North Carolina.
But Wake County is growing. Fast. And the demand for children’s health care is growing, too. That means that children sometimes have to wait for months to see a pediatric specialist.
That’s why people in Wake County and surrounding communities are coming together — they helped raise money for the new Children’s Hospital to meet the needs of our growing community and to expand and renovate the Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and are continuing to raise money to expand and enhance pediatric programs and services.
The new 34,000 square foot Children’s Hospital offers more hospital beds, more specialists and more advanced care for critically ill children.
Some key features of the new WakeMed Children’s Hospital are:
- 34,000 sq. ft. dedicated to pediatric care, occupying the entire fourth floor of the new patient tower (opened for patient care in July 2010).
- Private express elevator to the Children’s Hospital from the Visitor lobby.
- A new inpatient unit with 23 private, kid-friendly rooms, plus pediatric inpatient beds in the physical rehabilitation hospital.
- A new, state-of-the-art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, staffed by full-time pediatric intensivists (specialists in the care of critically ill children)
- An observation bed unit for children requiring less than a 24-hour stay.
- Expanded surgical capabilities as a result of the addition of new specialists.
- A treatment room so patients don’t have to go to other parts of the main hospital for minor procedures, preserving the patient’s room as a “safe place” where no procedures are performed.
- Dedicated family areas and playrooms providing greater comfort and convenience for patients, families and siblings.
- New technologies and additional pediatric subspecialties.
- Direct access to the fourth floor of the main hospital where the Women’s Pavilion & birthplace, nurseries and Level IV Intensive Care Nursery are located (all women’s and children’s services, from OB-GYN to pediatrics, are on the same floor).
- Level IV Intensive Care Nursery expansion to keep pace with the growth of the community and the region (average daily census is currently 42 with numerous requests that cannot be served due to space limitations).
