A portrait of Jerry Bernstein, MD, was unveiled recently at a reception attended by family, friends, colleagues, and special guests. The reception and portrait were to honor Dr. Bernstein for his contributions to pediatric medicine in Wake County and his role in making the WakeMed Children’s Hospital a reality.

Dr. Bernstein, a pediatrician with Raleigh Pediatric Associates for the past 36 years, is a passionate advocate for improving the availability of pediatric services in Wake County. He was instrumental in the development of the WakeMed Children’s Emergency Department, which opened as the first of its kind in North Carolina in 1997. He also helped spearhead the proposal to build the new WakeMed Children’s Hospital – the first dedicated children’s hospital in Wake County – which opened earlier this year.

Wes and Janet Chesson, long-time friends of Dr. Bernstein and his wife Peg, generously chose to pay tribute to their good friends and Dr. Bernstein’s work on behalf of the children of Wake County with a $1 million pledge to the WakeMed Foundation’s Just for Kids Kampaign. As a result, the new Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will be named the “Jerry C. Bernstein, MD Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.”

Dr. Bernstein continues to support the Foundation he helped create in a variety of ways. He serves on the Foundation’s Campaign Cabinet which recently began the next phase of its $20 million campaign – to raise an additional $8.3 million for the expansion and renovation of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and $3.2 million for pediatric services. He also helped to create and chairs the Foundation’s Physicians’ Council, which to date has raised $870,000 from the physician community toward a $1 million goal.

The portrait was commissioned by William Branson, III, Inc., out of Durham, North Carolina.

Nursing. It is such an important job. And anyone who has ever been admitted to a hospital or been to a doctor’s office knows that nurses that provide quality care and compassion are invaluable.

But, like teaching, nursing is often a thankless job. Let your favorite nurse know how much they mean to you by nominating them to be profiled in the News & Observer in the special nursing week insert scheduled to run in May.

But hurry. Nominations close Wednesday, April 14!
